Depression after Hysterectomy

This is quite a contradiction, though, to the findings of some studies, which show an improved mood among women who have undergone the procedure.
These studies show that the lives of women who underwent the surgery actually improved — socially, sexually, and psychologically. In these studies, it didn’t seem to matter whether or not these women experienced depression or anxiety before the surgery.
The following are some of the possible causes of depression for the women who do experience it after undergoing hysterectomy:
- A woman might feel less of a woman after her uterus is removed during the surgery.
- A woman might feel that her health is more vulnerable after undergoing the surgery.
- There is a fear that it might deteriorate the quality of personal relationships.
- There is much concern over whether the surgery will impose changes on a woman’s sexual life.
- A woman might feel saddened by the loss of her capability to bear children along with the loss of her uterus. This is whether or not she still wants to have children.
There’s no need to worry, though, as the woman usually goes back to her old self and gets her emotions under control as she continues to recover from the surgery.
However, although depression can be considered a normal side effect of a hysterectomy surgery, you should be wary if the depression lasts long after the surgery has taken place. You cannot just make depression go away, as there may be other factors causing it.
These factors can be based on the biological and chemical balance in your body, and only by consulting your doctor can you get the proper treatment that you need. The treatment is usually dependent on how serious the depression symptoms are and how frequently the bouts of depression occur.
Keep in mind that any woman can suffer from depression no matter what her age is or to which race she belongs.
Not only are physical problems and stress the only causes of depression. Depression is also a condition that can be inherited, or can be triggered by an imbalance in the neurotransmitters and chemicals in the brain.
Depression after hysterectomy, in particular, is caused by changes in a woman’s hormones, especially if the ovaries are removed during the procedure.
